What’s an Argonauta?

We are sometimes asked to explain the name of Argonauta Beach Getaways. When deciding on a name, we wanted to symbolize what our mission is – which is to provide comfortable, well-equipped homes for visitors of Oak Island, N.C. (OKI) to rely on and enjoy during their vacation experience.

Meriam Webster defines Argonauta as a genus of cephalopods (squid, octopus, etc.) of which females create a logarithmic (spiral pattern), thin, unchambered, coiled shell in the similar shape of their cousin, the nautilus. This shell can grow to up to 40 cm and is where eggs are grown, protected, and hatched. The male argonauta does not produce a shell and is only 1/20 the size of the female. To reproduce, the male detaches a third arm found in a pouch near its left eye. This arm, or tentacle, has sperm-filled grooves. The male basically hands the whole thing over to the female to save for later when she feels like fertilizing her stored eggs. This is one of the reasons that Argonautas are known as the weirdest octopus.

The idea that the female argonauta’s mission is to create a protective and comfortable space as it grows is the main theme here. Like momma argonautas, we aim to create comfortable spaces – but for our guests to be comfortable and safe while enjoying Oak Island and the surrounding areas. We want our guests to have as little worry as possible about the condition, safety, and comfort of their accommodation so they can focus on the quality moments of their vacation at our beautiful beaches.

The argonauta inspires us to continue growing - creating more places where folks can relax in a well-appointed home as they enjoy what OKI has to offer. Given that the logarithmic spiral prominently shows up in nature, its pattern is not only appealing to the eye, but an inspiration to find experiences that continuously build a robust and fruitful life. If that’s what we can help our guests with, our mission will be accomplished.
